I was browsing through Hobby Lobby and I saw this big white frame with plain burlap in the middle. It was $20 and I had a 40% off coupon (I actually just google “Hobby Lobby Coupon” on my phone while I’m in line and they always have a 40% one that you can pull up) so it ended up costing me $12! I’m pretty sure it was meant to be a bulletin board, but I’ve been looking for some art for my bathroom, and I thought I could paint something on this to make it work. Here’s how it looked when I picked it up:
I was inspired by those “State String Art” projects, but I don’t think I have enough patience for that, so I decided to paint Illinois on the board instead.
I first did a Google image search for “Illinois Silhouette”. I just picked the one that I thought was the most clear and printed it off my computer. I made it pretty big – it ended up printing on 4 pages. I matched up the 4 pages and taped them together. I traced the big state onto a large piece of white paper. Here is a picture of my taped together state that I printed off my computer, and the traced state on the big piece of paper. (I always keep a big roll of white paper in my house – I use it ALL the time – you can get one on Amazon here.)
When I was done tracing, I used an Exacto Blade to cut out Illinois from by big piece of paper. I taped the negative space from the state onto my frame and burlap and spray painted it white. Here is a picture what that looked like:
I let it dry and pulled the paper off.
The edges didn’t come out as crisp as I had hoped, so I grabbed a paint pen and went around the edges. That made my “oops” spots at the bottom not as noticeable, too (in my opinion).
After that was all dry, I hot glued a heart shaped button over where we live.
Then I hung it in our bathroom!
This would be easy to do with any state. Great gift for a family member or friend! My mother-in-law suggested it would be cute on a pillow, too. I agree!
